about

Boston band 007 -- Kind of a hybrid of The Specials, PiL, The Clash and the Bad Brains. Now there's a new 2016 remaster of live performances from 1980-82 available for digital download. The early material is kinda mod/ska later material kinda dub/post punk.

I was one of the two front guys. I sang and played backing guitar. The other front guy, Dee Rail, played bass. The strongest musician in the band was our guitarist, Steve, who wrote songs along with Rail and me. Garry pounded the drums for 007.

34 years ago, when Dee Rail split with 007, we cancelled a planned East Coast tour opening for the English Beat. (Actually, the tour went ahead, of course, but without us. The Bangles replaced us on the bill.) So, that lineup never toured and never released an album. But we had some fun original songs in those early days that were never heard after we became Dub7. Well, today, we’re releasing newly digitized and mastered audio tracks that have never been available on the web until now.

Some of the tracks on this digital “album” titled “007 Live In Boston And South Yarmouth: 1980, 1981, 1982” are really pretty rough in terms of quality, but have historical significance. One track was recorded at the Bradford Hotel Ballroom in 1981 when we opened for The Specials the same night that they disbanded. A couple of tracks were from one of our earliest shows at The Underground in 1980, just weeks after John Lennon was shot. Four of the tracks are from the mixing board at Cape Cod Coliseum in August 1982 when we opened for The Clash on their Combat Rock Tour.

You can download the full set of tracks for only $7.77 USD. Bargain, right?

I’ll be creating a Facebook Page to go with the release. Also, will talk about each track in my weekly live broadcast on Facebook the night after tomorrow. If that comes out okay, I’ll put it on YouTube.

We have no record label, no corprate backing, not even any indie backing, not even much out-of-pocket budget for promoting this. There’s no press release. The whole thing is low key. But you can help spread the news on social media. So, please boost it if you can. Share. Reblog. Tweet the news out if you like this stuff!

There’s a page on the band website that you can share if you want one link:

about

007 a.k.a. Dub7 Boston, Massachusetts

007 was a "mod, post-punk, dub" band active in the early 1980s, a Boston, MA (USA) group that drew on punk, r&b, 60s pop, and dub, but was promoted and perceived as something akin to, or analogous to, the 2 Tone bands. Racially mixed, opening for acts identified with the British ska revivial of the time — The Specials, The English Beat, Bad Manners — 007 (Dub7) was frequently labeled a "ska band." ... more
